How to Engage Nonprofit Supporters Through Powerful Storytelling

February 6, 2025

The vast majority of nonprofits are based around the interests or passion of a founder, but an organization’s success isn’t as simple as convincing audiences to feel just as passionately about the cause. This challenge is further accentuated by the fact that there are over 1.5 million registered nonprofits in the U.S. vying for donor attention and support.

We probably don’t have to tell you — the nonprofit world is saturated with heartfelt work and limitless opportunities to give back. So, how do you create meaningful connections with potential supporters who genuinely connect with your mission?

Proven Storytelling Strategies for Nonprofit Success
While there are a number of ways to promote your nonprofit’s mission, storytelling  consistently proves to be one of the most effective methods for donor engagement and retention. Here are some our favorite ways to attract and maintain the attention of supporters:

Share Your Origin Story
You are working for and care about your nonprofit for a reason. Actually, probably 20 reasons! You can express these reasons to your audience in a concise but powerful way by sharing your own story as a founder or executive in your organization. This could exist as:

  • An “About Us” page optimized for search visibility
  • A strategic social media campaign
  • A high-converting video that’s used at events or in an email

Use Imagery and Tap Into People’s Senses
Remember that tapping into people’s senses is powerful. Give people something to see, hear, feel or even taste! Imagery, especially, will go a long way in helping people connect to your cause. This means including event photos, such as people running a 5k your organization held, sharing emotional success stories with compelling visuals (photo or video), or including branded visual elements like icons and logos that reinforce your organization’s mission.

Never underestimate imagery as a key method for your storytelling.

Leverage Positive Testimonials
What’s better than showing the impact of your organization through the lens of someone you’ve helped? Highlighting how your nonprofit has impacted other people can help you show off your success in an authentic way.

A few ideas for doing this include:

  • SEO-optimized testimonial pages
  • Impact quotes featured on your website
  • Donor success stories in your email newsletters
  • Reviews or short videos expressing your nonprofit’s impact

Don’t underestimate thepower of a firsthand account — encouraging people to share their own experiences with your nonprofit will improve your connection to your community, build awareness of your organization and bolster your credibility.

Communicate Results with Context
Instead of simply presenting statistics, consider showing off your results in a format that tells more of the story.

For example, instead of listing “7,400 children fed,” consider choosing to say “We provided free school lunches to 7,400 Tarrant County children in 2025, improving local student nutrition.”

While this may seem like a small difference, expressing results in a way that engages one’s imagination can help audiences see the bigger picture of your work. This can help them mentally connect your organization to children in their local area, understand that you focus specifically on school lunches, and it gives a timeframe to highlight the magnitude of your work.
