Social Media Marketing for Nonprofits: Platform-Specific Audience Engagement Strategies

June 17, 2025

While many nonprofits recognize the value of social media for audience engagement, success requires more than just posting the same content everywhere. Each platform has its own unique culture, user behavior and content preferences that directly impact how your message is received.

The key to effective nonprofit social media marketing lies in understanding these differences and adapting your approach accordingly. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all strategy, successful organizations tailor their content, tone and messaging to match what resonates with their specific audience on each platform.

Here are our most effective strategies for connecting with your audience across different social media platforms:

Don’t Overlook the Insights: How to Analyze Your Social Media Performance

Analytics are important! Whether you choose to keep it simple and focus on things like followers, views, likes and comments, or deep dive into the more complex data, keeping an eye on what content is working for you can be super helpful. When analyzing your performance, a good rule of thumb is to track your insights on a regular basis (monthly, quarterly, etc.). Focus on your own growth and insights, not the number of followers other organizations have.

While looking at other nonprofits can be an easy way to benchmark, focusing on your own growth and improving your strategy based on what your own data tells you is our preferred tactic for success.

Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, TikTok and YouTube all have different users and different purposes. Once again, make sure to focus on how these platforms’ audiences relate to your content. While many organizations may experience the most engagement via video content on Facebook, your nonprofit may find that images with brief captions perform the best for you.

With that in mind, here are some stats for each platform and the kinds of content we recommend for each:

Instagram

  • Short-form videos and eye-catching graphics
  • 2 billion active monthly users
  • 60% of users are between ages 18 and 34

Facebook

  • Text posts and static images
  • 3.03 billion active monthly users
  • 29.4% of users are ages 25-34

LinkedIn

  • Text posts and static images, with a more educational/work focus
  • 310 million monthly active users
  • 60% of users are between ages 25 and 34

X (Formerly Twitter)

  • Text posts featuring updates and news
  • 660 million monthly active users
  • 58% of users are between ages 18 and 34

TikTok

  • Short form videos with relatable content
  • 1.2 billion monthly users
  • 70% of users are between ages 18 and 34

YouTube

  • Long-form videos
  • 2.5 billion monthly active users
  • 38% of users are between ages 25 and 44

With those basics as a starting point, it may be time to consider how you’re tailoring your content to the audiences on each platform and the formats the platforms prefer. Even making small adjustments can lead to noticeable changes in your posts’ reach and engagement rates. Just remember, the name of the game is improvement!
